Brother's Living Room Curtains

I have helped my friend Sue to sew several curtains, as she trained me in the Art. However these curtains for my brother's living room are my first solo project in this style of curtain making (I have made curtains before but not like these). The living room windows involved are also sliding doors and the most frequently used entrance of his house. I decided that I would like to make these curtains washable (or at least dry-cleanable) since there is a chance they may become soiled over time. This meant that each of the 3 fabrics used to make them (facing, lining and interlining) had to be tested for shrinkage. If the curtains are made up and then cleaned and the shrinkage is different , then a very strange looking mess will result. The facing fabric shrank 3cm in a metre, the lining barely at all at only 1cm but the lining shrank something like 7cm! So the shrinkage rates had to be included in the calculations for cutting each of the lengths. I was very pleased with my pattern matching across the seams (see photo left).

The curtains have each of the 3 layers connected loosely to each other using lines of hand stitching the full drop of the curtain, every third of a panel, then along the sides and the hems. So altogether 26 lines of stitching plus the hem. The last step is to insert the buckram heading tape (photo left). Then the last step is calculating the spacing and then making up the pleats ready for the hooks.
