Originally there was a door filling this doorway, but there were 3 doors
all opening into the same space, and they used to bang into each other
with an almighty crash. Very jarring to the nerves. So I took the door
from this doorway off its hinges and stored it in the garage. Most of the
year this is a very happy arrangement, but in the cold months, the absence
of a door makes the kitchen cold and draughty. I wanted a double sided
curtain, because it would be seen from both sides, and I wanted it
over-sized so that it would drape on the floor and exclude draughts. I was
able to use 2 lengths of my scavenged curtain fabrics for the job but had
to sew the whole thing by hand because my machine objected to all the
thicknesses. I positioned the curtain rod off centre above the door on the
laundry side (bottom photo) so that the curtain could be pushed well out
of way and off to one side when the doorway is in use. The kitchen did
feel warmer as a result, but could also be quite dark and dingy.
